The BlackBerry Revival: A Hands-on Experience with Clicks' Communicator
Get ready for a blast from the past with a modern twist! Clicks Technology, a mobile keyboard specialist, has unveiled its take on the iconic BlackBerry smartphone, and we got our hands on a prototype. But here's the twist: it's not just a BlackBerry clone; it's a unique blend of old-school charm and modern functionality.
The $499 Communicator boasts a physical keyboard, reminiscent of the BlackBerry days, and an Android-powered touchscreen. Clicks has even developed a separate $79 slide-out keyboard accessory, bringing the physical typing experience to any device.
We caught up with Clicks' CMO and co-founder, Jeff Gadway, at CES, and he shared some exciting insights. The reception for these devices has surpassed expectations, with Gadway revealing that the company is selling one every 6.5 seconds! And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the keyboard; it's about the entire user experience.
The prototype we tested gave us a glimpse into the future. With 256GB of onboard storage, expandable up to 2TB, a powerful 4000mAh battery, and a sleek 170-gram build, it's a force to be reckoned with. The interchangeable back covers add a touch of personalization, and the elevated screen design protects those precious keys.
One of the most intriguing features is the 'Signal Light' side button. It's a customizable notification system, allowing you to glow with different colors for specific contacts or apps. No more missing important messages!
But here's where it gets controversial: the tactile keys. The prototype's keys might be a tad less 'clicky' than the final product, sparking debates among the co-founders. Should it be 110, 120, or 130 grams of pressure? The verdict is still out, but it's an interesting dilemma. Less pressure might appeal to newcomers, while fast typists prefer a more audible feedback.
The keys and screen are seamlessly integrated, allowing for a smooth transition between typing and touchscreen navigation. It's a true blend of the old and new.
The Communicator's cameras are impressive, with a 24MP front camera and a 50MP rear camera featuring optical and electronic image stabilization. It's powered by a 4nm MediaTek 5G IoT processor, ensuring smooth performance.
Other notable features include a 4.03-inch AMOLED display, wired and wireless charging, Qi compatibility, and Android Strongbox security. Plus, it offers five years of security and Android updates, ensuring a long-lasting and secure experience.
Expected to ship in late 2026, the Clicks Communicator is a refreshing take on the smartphone market. It's a device that blends nostalgia with modern functionality, and we can't wait to see how it fares. What do you think? Will the Communicator be a hit, or is it just a nostalgic gimmick? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
