Shocking Allegations: Human Rights Violations at Alligator Alcatraz (2026)

Amnesty International's recent report unveils deeply disturbing allegations of human rights violations at the Florida immigration jail infamously known as 'Alligator Alcatraz.' This report paints a grim picture of the treatment endured by detainees, raising serious questions about the conditions within these facilities.

The report details shocking accounts, including detainees being confined in a 2-foot-high metal cage, left outdoors without water for extended periods. This facility, operated by the Florida Department of Emergency Management (DEM), has drawn severe criticism for its harsh conditions.

The report highlights the use of a cage, referred to as 'the box,' for arbitrary punishments, even for minor offenses. Detainees have reported exposure to the harsh Florida sun, humidity, and mosquitos. One detainee shared an account of being punished for attempting to help a fellow detainee receive medication.

But here's where it gets controversial... The Florida government, under Governor Ron DeSantis, has dismissed the report as a politically motivated attack. However, the facility has a history of controversy, opening in July and quickly gaining a reputation for human rights abuses.

The report also sheds light on the conditions at the Krome North Service processing center in West Miami. Detainees at Krome have reportedly faced overcrowding, inadequate medical care, and disciplinary practices, including prolonged solitary confinement.

And this is the part most people miss... Violence and racist abuse by guards against migrants were also commonplace, according to Amnesty. Some detainees were forced to sleep on buses for days without access to basic facilities.

The report also criticizes the unorthodox operation of 'Alligator Alcatraz,' which operates outside federal oversight, without the standard tracking systems used in ICE facilities. This lack of oversight has led to concerns about detainees' whereabouts, making it difficult for families and legal representatives to locate them.

The report's recommendations include closing 'Alligator Alcatraz' and ending cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
