The Tigers' Season Takes a Hit: Reese Olson's Shoulder Surgery Leaves a Void
In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Detroit Tigers' camp, right-hander Reese Olson's season has come to an abrupt end. The team has announced that Olson underwent a right shoulder labral repair, leaving a significant gap in their pitching rotation for the 2026 season.
Olson, a reliable presence since his debut in 2023, has been placed on the 60-day Injured List (IL), alongside fellow pitcher Jackson Jobe. This double blow opens up roster spots for recent free agent signings, Framber Valdez and Justin Verlander, who will now play a crucial role in Detroit's pitching strategy.
But here's where it gets controversial... Olson's injury history has been a cause for concern. His 2025 season ended prematurely in July due to a shoulder strain, and despite rumors of an uncertain Opening Day, there was no indication of such an extended absence. His surgery, performed on February 2nd, has left many fans and analysts questioning the team's handling of the situation.
The signings of Valdez and Verlander now make more sense in light of Olson's revelation. Detroit's rotation will now rely heavily on Valdez and Tarik Skubal at the top, followed by a formidable trio of Verlander, Jack Flaherty, and Casey Mize. Troy Melton will provide depth, and Jobe could potentially join the mix later in the season, if all goes well with his recovery.
At just 26 years old, Olson has shown promise with a respectable 3.60 ERA and decent strikeout numbers across 56 MLB appearances. However, injuries have plagued his career, with shoulder and finger issues keeping him sidelined for significant periods. In 2024, he missed most of the second half due to a shoulder strain, and last season, he battled finger inflammation, only to return for a brief four-game stint before succumbing to another shoulder injury.
Olson's journey with the Tigers began in 2021 when he was acquired from the Brewers in exchange for Daniel Norris. He quickly progressed through the minor leagues, showcasing an impressive 33.1% strikeout rate in 2022 at the Double-A level. His promotion to Triple-A in 2023 further highlighted his ability to dominate batters, despite a higher ERA with Toledo.
Despite possessing two plus swing-and-miss pitches, Olson has struggled to replicate his minor league success in the majors. His changeup and slider, with whiff rates above 42% in 2024 and 2025, haven't translated into the expected punchouts. Olson's swinging-strike rate has remained consistent at 12.7% over the past two seasons, but his strikeout numbers have been average at best, falling short of the strikeout-per-inning mark with the Tigers.
