In a surprising announcement, Premier Chris Minns has confirmed that NSW will enjoy an additional public holiday on Anzac Day weekend for the next two years. This decision, however, is not without its controversies and considerations.
For those unfamiliar, Anzac Day, observed on April 25th, is a significant day of remembrance in Australia. In NSW, if Anzac Day fell on a weekend, there was no official public holiday. But now, the government is implementing a trial, and here's where it gets interesting: NSW will have a public holiday on April 27th this year and April 26th next year, aligning with Western Australia and the ACT's practices.
Minns believes this extra holiday will provide an opportunity for people to connect with loved ones while still honoring the essence of Anzac Day. He states, "We believe this additional holiday is necessary and won't diminish the importance of the day."
But here's the part most people miss: this decision is not without opposition. Minns acknowledges that business owners may not be thrilled, especially small businesses, as it adds an extra burden. He emphasizes, "We understand the concerns, but we believe this is a necessary step for the state."
The decision was made after discussions with RSL NSW, who ultimately supported it. Acting President Vince Williams explains, "Our members were divided, but the board voted in favor. We must respect those opposed to change."
