Imagine: You're cycling, enjoying the breeze, when suddenly, a massive truck veers dangerously close. Your life flashes before your eyes. This is the reality for cyclists on busy roads like Footscray Road in Melbourne. But, a game-changer has arrived!
Australia's cycling community, including decorated cyclists like Cadel Evans, knows this fear all too well. They've experienced those heart-stopping moments where safety feels like a gamble. But now, there's a solution: the 2.5-kilometer Dixon Veloway.
This elevated cycling path, often called a "green snake," offers a safe haven above the chaos of Footscray Road. It stretches from Shepherd Bridge to Moonee Ponds Creek, allowing cyclists to bypass the truck-filled streets near the city's port.
And this is the part most people miss... The section of Footscray Road the veloway bypasses has seen tragic events. In February 2023, cyclist Angus Collins, 22, lost his life after being hit by a turning truck. This underscores the urgent need for safer cycling infrastructure.
Evans, a former Tour de France winner, highlights the discouraging nature of sharing roads with heavy traffic. The Dixon Veloway offers a much-needed alternative. He explains, "Riding through Footscray Road was a bit messy, partly because of not having shoulders on the road.” He adds, “I think people who haven’t ridden don’t understand that when a car or truck passes nearby, you see your life flash by in front of you, and it stays with you for a long time. It’s intimidating, and we don’t want people to be discouraged from doing exercise.”
By using the Dixon Veloway, which reaches 16 meters at its highest point, riders avoid six dangerous intersections along Footscray Road.
Families are already embracing the new path. Footscray local Nick Reynolds and his 7-year-old daughter, Holly, tried it out and were thrilled. He says it's a great way to encourage kids to be active, offering an alternative to screen time.
The path is named in honor of Iris Dixon, an Australian Cycling Hall of Famer. She was a pioneer for women in the sport after World War II, with 16 road and track titles to her name. Her daughter, Denise Gillis, believes the veloway is a fitting tribute. Dixon's love for cycling was lifelong; she rode well into her 80s and passed away in 2022 at the age of 91.
The veloway is equipped with 20 CCTV cameras, two emergency exits, and safety netting to protect riders.
Transport Infrastructure Minister Gabrielle Williams notes the excitement of locals, emphasizing the veloway's importance in improving cycling safety in Melbourne's inner-west.
