The recent launch of iOS 26.2 has stirred excitement among Apple users, introducing an array of innovative features, one of which is a significant upgrade to AirDrop known as "AirDrop codes." AirDrop has been a beloved function on the iPhone for a long time, allowing users to effortlessly share images, documents, and more with friends and family. However, the update in iOS 26.2 introduces a notable twist: the ability to use codes for enhanced security.
So, what exactly are AirDrop codes? According to Apple's official release notes, these codes provide an extra layer of verification when sharing files with contacts you do not know personally. When you initiate an AirDrop transfer, a unique code will appear on the recipient’s device, which the sender needs to enter to complete the file sharing process.
When setting up AirDrop on your device, Apple offers three distinct options for receiving files:
- Receiving Off - No one can send you files.
- Contacts Only - Only your saved contacts can send you files.
- Everyone for 10 Minutes - Anyone nearby can send you files for a limited time.
With the introduction of AirDrop codes in iOS 26.2, there exists a practical fourth option. If you wish to share files with someone who isn’t in your contacts, you can temporarily authorize the exchange through this one-time code system. After the sender inputs the code, both parties will be visible as AirDrop options to each other for a period of 30 days.
To manage this temporary authorization, navigate to Settings ⇾ General ⇾ AirDrop, where you can keep track of your AirDrop connections. Apple has noted, “You will automatically appear for 30 days to people you have shared a one-time code with.”
Think about how often you might find it necessary to share files with someone multiple times without adding them as a permanent contact. Perhaps Apple believes this scenario occurs frequently enough to warrant this feature. The convenience of AirDrop codes lies in their simplicity and speed compared to existing methods.
While the 'Everyone for 10 Minutes' option significantly lowers your security, and 'Contacts Only' might be seen as a hassle due to the time it takes to create a new contact, using an AirDrop code streamlines the process. It allows for swift, hassle-free file sharing with up to 30 days of access granted to the recipient.
