How does it work?
The myTNB app simplifies the ToU switch into a four-step process. First, you'll need to launch the app and log in to your account. Then, locate the ToU icon and select the account you want to adjust. You'll be presented with an explanation of the scheme, after which you tap "Start" to proceed. Finally, verify your account details and tap "Send" to submit your application. It's that simple!
But here's where it gets controversial... The speed of the switch depends on whether you have a smart meter installed. If you do, TNB estimates the switch will take up to five working days. However, if you don't have a smart meter, the process could take up to two months due to the installation requirement. This difference in waiting time could be a significant factor for many consumers.
A Quick Refresher on the ToU Scheme:
ToU pricing, introduced by TNB, offers lower electricity rates during off-peak hours and slightly higher rates during peak periods. This is designed to incentivize consumers to shift their energy usage to times when demand is lower, which can help stabilize the grid.
Peak Hours vs. Off-Peak Hours:
- Peak Hours: Weekdays (Monday to Friday) from 2 PM to 10 PM.
- Off-Peak Hours: From 10 PM to 2 PM.

- Households consuming up to 1,500 kWh per month:
- Peak rate: 28.52 sen/kWh
- Off-peak rate: 24.43 sen/kWh
- Households exceeding 1,500 kWh per month:
- Peak rate: 38.52 sen/kWh
- Off-peak rate: 34.43 sen/kWh
And this is the part most people miss... The ToU scheme is only beneficial if you can shift a significant portion of your energy consumption to off-peak hours.
