At 38 years old, Djokovic had an impressive start to the season in Melbourne. He reached his 38th Grand Slam final and made history as the oldest player ever to appear in the title match at the Australian Open.
During the semi-finals, he displayed remarkable tenacity against Jannik Sinner, prevailing in a grueling match that lasted four hours and nine minutes with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The Serbian great demonstrated his resilience by saving 16 out of 18 break points and overcoming two separate deficits to secure his place in the final.
This achievement marked Djokovic's 17th year featuring in a Grand Slam final, further solidifying his legendary status. However, in the chase for his 25th Major title, he faced a tough defeat against world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, losing in four sets: 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5.
Djokovic started strong in the final, dominating the initial stages of the match with effective serves and breaking Alcaraz twice, allowing him to establish a significant advantage. Yet, as the match progressed, his performance waned during the second and third sets.
Alcaraz capitalized on this shift in momentum, achieving five breaks and gaining control leading into the fourth set. Although Djokovic saved six break points early in set four and even had a chance to break back at 4-4, he unfortunately squandered it with an uncharacteristic forehand error.
Ultimately, Carlos managed a crucial late break at 6-5, sealing his victory and lifting the coveted trophy. Despite the outcome, Djokovic took pride in his determined performance against the current elite of tennis. After returning home, he aimed to recharge before heading to Cortina to enjoy the Winter Olympics.
As anticipated, Djokovic has chosen to take additional time away from the court to recover ahead of upcoming tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami. Notably, he secured two titles in Doha back in 2016 and 2017, but after his return last year, he faced a disappointing first-round exit against Matteo Berrettini in straight sets.
