The Mark Gunter Photo Awards: Celebrating Cycling's Visual Storytellers
A Decade of Honoring a Legacy
As 2025 comes to an end, we're thrilled to announce the 10th edition of the Mark Gunter Photo Awards (MGPA), a prestigious event that pays homage to the late Mark Gunter, a cycling photographer extraordinaire. Mark's untimely passing in 2015 left a void in the cycling community, but his legacy lives on through these awards, which have become an annual tradition.
But here's what sets the MGPA apart: it's not just about honoring Mark's work; it's about fostering the next generation of cycling photographers. The awards celebrate the art of capturing the beauty, drama, and emotion of cycling, all while supporting a worthy cause.
A Tribute and a Celebration
Mark Gunter's photography captured the essence of cycling, from the thrill of the race to the camaraderie of the peloton. His work inspired countless photographers to pick up their cameras and embark on their own visual journeys. The MGPA is a platform to showcase the best of these talents, both professional and amateur, and to ensure that Mark's passion continues to inspire.
The Categories and Prizes
The MGPA invites photographers to submit their best work in three categories: Professional, Amateur, and Smartphone. The Professional category promises prestige and a perpetual trophy, while the Amateur category offers fantastic prizes from Ritchey, Albion, and Feedback Sports. Even smartphone photographers get a chance to shine, with the first photo submitted for free.
And here's where it gets exciting: Escape members who enter the competition are automatically eligible for additional prizes from POC, including a helmet and sunglasses.
A Cause Worth Supporting
The MGPA isn't just about accolades; it's about giving back. All entry fees are donated to cancer research through the Australian charity Tour de Cure. By participating, you're not only showcasing your talent but also contributing to a noble cause. And if you're not a photographer, you can still support Tour de Cure by voting for your favorite photos, with each vote requiring a donation.
The Judges: A Panel of Legends
The MGPA is judged by esteemed professional photographers who understand the art and sport of cycling intimately. Léon van Bon, winner of the 2024 MGPA, brings his unique perspective as a former professional cyclist turned photographer. Michael Blann, renowned for his book 'Mountains: Epic Cycling Climbs', offers a rare insight into the beauty of cycling's toughest ascents. And Twila Federica, a rising talent, brings a fresh eye to the judging panel.
Controversy Corner: Excluding Gravity Mountain Biking
One might question the decision to exclude gravity mountain biking photos, as these images often capture the raw intensity and breathtaking landscapes of the sport. However, the MGPA organizers believe that dedicated competitions for these disciplines provide a more suitable platform for these photographers to showcase their work.
Get Inspired and Join the Journey
The MGPA is now open for entries, and we can't wait to see the incredible submissions. Whether you're a seasoned professional or an amateur with a passion for cycling, this is your chance to be part of a community that celebrates the art of cycling photography. Check out the 2024 winners and shortlists to get inspired, and start capturing those moments that make cycling so special.
